Shelri Dugdra (Shey Crystal Mountain) is located at an altitude of 5565m above from sea level. It is two camps away from the famous Phoksundo Lake. Various fairs and festivals are held in Upper Dolpa throughout the year. Among the various fairs and festivals, the Shey Festival is one of the religious festivals for the people of Upper Dolpo which is celebrated every 12 years based on the Tibetan Lunar Calendar, a year of the wood dragon. The Tibetan lunar calendar has twelve cycles, each symbolized by a different animal. The animals that represents the year are  Mouse, Ox, Tiger, Hare, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Bird, Dog, and Pig. The year 2024 is also known as the Year of the Dragon. The Dragon Year is the touristic and pilgrimage year of Crystal Mountain's (Shey Ribo Drugda). The 67th Shey Festivals fall on September 1st to September 4th.

According to legend, 824 years ago Buddhist ascetic Drikung Kyobpa Jigten Gonpo sent his disciple Druptop Shinge Yeshe to explore Shey. Yeshe subdued the fierce mountain spirit and transformed it into the abude of Chakrasamvara - the pure Crystal Mountain. During annual circumambulation (kora) pilgrimages, Dolpo people circumambulate Crystal Mountain.

There are three ancient monasteries in Shey namely; Shey Sumdho Monastery, Tsakhang Monastery, and Gonmoche Monastery where Druptop Shinge Yeshe meditated and attained enlightenment. His relics are kept in a cave there.
